Cross culturally rites of passages have three essential phases. Becoming a mother journeys through pregnancy, birth and postpartum, where one can not occur without the other. When the rite of passage of becoming mother is witnessed and honoured in its purpose and wholeness, a mother can emerge into her community feeling empowered, radiant and supported to fulfil her new responsibilities from a place of honour, rather than a place of apprehension.

A postpartum ceremony including the closing of the bones is a beautiful way to honour the amazing work a mother has done and is doing. It is a sacred time for mother to take a pause for herself and to be held and nurtured by the embrace of a ‘rebozo’ which facilitates gentle healing physically, emotionally and energetically.

Our pelvis is a remarkable piece of engineering with bone, muscles, ligaments, tendons and fascia helping both stabilise the body and allow for motion. The health of our pelvis is essential to the health of our whole body. During pregnancy, the hips, open, becoming wider and wider to accommodate the growing baby, and prepare the body for birth.

It is vitally important to help the hips close post birth, otherwise, mothers can suffer from pelvic instability as a result. Physically, the closing of the bones helps with the approximation of the abdominal muscle, fascia and the knitting of the pelvic bones.

It is a time when the mother can process everything they are feeling and thinking and provide space to heal emotionally to gain strength. It helps mothers find closure to their birth story and to release emotions she may have associated with pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

It helps to bring mothers back to their own self, calling the mothers spirit back home as she has been a portal for carrying new life into the world.

The Postpartum Ceremony is designed for mothers from 6 weeks postpartum and beyond. The ceremony is open to all mothers at any time who wish to find some closure for themselves no matter how old your child is.  Most women find it most beneficial between 6 to 12 weeks postpartum.
